Look to your collection of visual inspiration, your LOVES, inspiration that makes you envy its creator and, as we say, “hate them.”

Edit down to the top 120–200 images. Print all works at thumbnail scale, 2–3 inches, then trim them out.

Select folder JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, SVG, or TIFF

Digitally arrange your collected images along a matrix. Choose two opposing qualities for each axis, then position each image according to where it belongs between those extremes.

Look for clusters, gaps, contradictions, and unexpected relationships. Your matrix should make your point of view visible—not simply organize the images into equal rows.

Digitize your images from your analog collection.
Place every image according to both sets of qualities.
Adjust scale and spacing to emphasize meaningful patterns.
Add labels to your clusters of images.
Export your finished matrix as a single image or PDF.
Feel free to print multiple matrices to account for the size of your collection.
